The Creation Series
The Creation Series is the title of a large geometric combination consisting of 16 units (each 4 feet by 2½ feet) which are separated into 4 stages (combinations of 4 units each). The stages can be viewed as horizontal combinations, or as vertical combinations.
As horizontal combinations, The Creation Series is mural-like in appearance. It is 4 feet high and at least 40 wide but with proper spacing between and around the stages, the exhibition wall should be at least 50 feet wide.
As vertical combinations, The Creation Series appears as a cluster of towers or columns that reach a height of about 13½ feet on the exhibition wall (10 feet high with 3½ feet at the base). The overall dimensions of this cluster are about 13½ feet high by about 24 feet wide.
In the June, 2016 group show "Abstract Aspects of the Universe" at the R.Blitzer Gallery in Santa Cruz, California, The Creation Series was hung as horizontal combinations on the largest wall of the gallery, which is 52 feet wide.
As the title denotes, this large work of acrylics on canvas is an attempt by me to visually interpret the creation of the universe, an infinite subject, using limited means. I have elected to do so in 4 stages of 4 units each.
Stage one is "The Big Bang!";
Stage two is "Emerging from Chaos";
Stage three is "Capturing Air and Light";
Stage four is "Forming Sea and Land";
Although the 16 units in 4 stages constitute a "whole work", its design and execution is that of a sequential "series". I, therefore, chose to diversify the "series" by individualizing the design and the color relationships of each stage, taking into consideration how, from an overall design and color standpoint, each stage would interact with the work as a whole.
The inspiration for The Creation Series is "In Seven Days", the marvelously interactive and cutting edge musical composition of the British contemporary composer Thomas Ades, joined and integrated with the visual imagery of his videographer, Israeli born spouse Tal Rosner. I heard and saw this work performed for the first time by the Santa Cruz Symphony Orchestra (Daniel Stewart, conducting) in the Fall, 2014. Deeply affected by this powerful work, I decided to attempt my own artistic interpretation of the creation. I started the project in November, 2014, and completed it a year later, in November, 2015.
I have exhibited portions of this work in group exhibitions before and after June, 2016, but the group exhibition titled "Abstract Aspects of the Universe" at the R.Blitzer Gallery in Santa Cruz, CA was the only time The Creation Series was shown in its entirety.
